Can somebody please tell me how long a brand new IBM thinkpad A31P battery is supposed to last?

    Certainly. That is a lemon and you should contact IBM/Lenovo if you are under warrenty. Battery life for even the most power-hungry laptops is around 1 hour.

    Laptop batteries degrade over time and charge/discharge cycles. A new battery should give you a couple of hours life. It will depend on your power settings, usage and what size battery you get.

    If you use the power manager to recondition your current battery you may see some improvement.
