I just received an IBM ThinkPad replacement battery. And, it came with instructions. When the product is newly used, it should be recharged as per the following cycle: First, charge the battery fully. Second, discharge the battery completely. Third, charge the battery fully. Fourth, discharge the battery completely. The battery should be recharged as noted more than once a month.

If you open up the Power Manager, then there is a button for battery maintenance. This will allow the system to automatically charge, discharge and then recharge the battery.
