The battery is the problem; if it was the adapter it would not work when you plugged into the wall.

You pretty much answered your own question on the battery.

Your battery is probably shot. However, do this. turn off the laptop. unplug it and remove the battery, Plug it back in with the battery out and turn it back on. If it turns on, ony the battery is dead. If it fails to turn on with the ac plugged in, then the ac adapter needs to be replaced as well.

You might want to call IBM's tech support, especially if you still have a warranty on the computer.
But it sounds like at first the battery died (because you had to keep it plugged into the wall for power) and now maybe the AC adapter is broken.

You can buy universal laptop AC adapters (which require some calibration for your specific computer), I know Radio Shack sells one that I've used, and it works, but there are others. But theres still no guarantee that the new ac adapter will solve your problem.
