I just received a laptop for an early Christmas present and its an older laptop, not brand new, and when the battery charges it goes from 5%-21% really slow then all of a sudden charges in like 30 seconds from 21%-100% then when I unplug the charger it only lasts anywhere from 5-30 mins. Is this normal? Should I return it? or should I just keep the charger plugged in?

Your battery has been used so many times that it needs replacing if you need to use the pc on battery power.

You can work indefinitely with the charger plugged in.

Generally, a battery can use 2-3 hours after fully charged without charger, also depends on the contents your laptop display, but new laptop battery may need several times fully charged and exhausted to let it go to the best condition, or else I’m afraid you need to change a new one, I recommend a good laptop battery site, which is, you can find IBM Thinkpad Laptop battery at their site.
