If cox included a router built into your modem then that will work. If not you can purchase a router for around 50-70 dollars at most electronics stores.
Usually the aftermarket router will be of better quality and can cover a greater wireless distance around your house.
Routers that are marked 802.11N have the greatest distance followed by 802.11G. Anything older than that would not be a wise purchase.

You probably have a modem. (Cox is a cable company, right?) If you want your laptop to work wirelessly, you will need a wireless router to connect to the internet. They cost between $100 - $150. Otherwise, you can just use the ethernet cable(The Ethernet cable is the cord that is currently connecting your desktop pc to the modem. It looks like a phone cord, but bigger.) and plug it into the back of the laptop.
